Following the release of his debut album “Treading air” in December 2010, vocalist/guitarist/percussionist/live-looping artist Dylan Hammond began continually touring the country. Having toured the east coast from The Great Ocean Road to Byron Bay twice last year and from Melbourne to Adelaide earlier this year, ‘the road’ is a kind of home away from home for him. Settling only for 4 months in Falls Creek, Victoria this year for his 6th consecutive snow season as the resorts resident musician, he’s played between 9 and 14 shows a week from June to October. Now in need of a sea change and incredibly well rehearsed, Dylan is super keen to get back to “van life” and on the road for the official Treading air Tour. Beginning the tour mid-October in Torquay, Victoria, Dylan will be playing some of his most high profile shows to date in Melbourne, Wollongong, Sydney, Byron Bay, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine coast ending the tour late November in Maroochydore, Queensland.

The independent release of Treading air is the result of years of playing, writing and recording with bands and as a solo artist. Beginning his musical journey on pianos and organs as a child, he then moved onward to drums, percussion, guitar and vocals as a teenager. As a result, Dylan’s feel and rhythm have been strongly developed and mark the basis for his percussive live performances. At the heart of his shows is a live looping pedal system, allowing this singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist to create bass lines, rhythm tracks, beats and vocal harmonies to accompany his essentially acoustic performances. Audiences are often surprised when their first impression of a solo acoustic artist suddenly turns into a one man band and back again.

Dylan Hammond is a lover of life and music. He is a multi- instrumentalist, a passionate vocalist and an energetic performer. This picker and strummer of stringed instruments, has guided himself through the exploration of acoustic, electric and bass guitars, mandolins, ukuleles and banjos.

His sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, often powerful and always emotive vocal performances are for the eyes as well as the ears. The effort behind each note can be seen in the expressions of his face and the movements of his body as he travels freely through aggressive screams into delicate falsettos.

Beginning his musical journey on the piano as a child and moving to the drums as a teenager, Dylan’s feel and rhythm are strongly developed and mark the basis for his percussive live shows. A talented and careful percussionist, his busy hands are never far from a hand drum or a pair of maracas sited amongst the myriad of percussion instruments that surround him.

His live performances employ not only musical, but technical prowess. At the heart of his shows is a live looping system, which he operates with ease to produce bass lines, rhythm tracks, vocal harmonies and beats both thumping and subtle, to accompany his already unique guitar and vocal style. Dylan Hammonds love for many different genres is observably strewn throughout his music and poetry. With a rich attachment to blues, soul, jazz, metal, funk, reggae, world music and folk, coupled with a great concern for dynamics and subtlety; his song writing demonstrates musical knowledge, originality and maturity. His percussive background attracts him to the use of unusual time signatures, while his roots in traditional styles enable him to evoke feelings of familiarity in an audience unacquainted with his songs. His lyrical intention is to arouse a desire to interpret his words and find the always present moral, but very rarely are his messages obvious.

In December 2010 Dylan successfully launched his first independent release ‘Treading air’ to an anticipating fan base. “Treading air” is the result of years of playing and writing in bands and as a solo artist, and is an achievement Dylan has long been striving for. Within its 11 original tracks, there are many varied musical and instrumental elements from song to song and is reflective in parts of his time in original band ‘Wednesday Circle’ taking on a band feel, while also mellowing to the simplicity of an acoustic guitar and vocals.

The album was recorded in conjunction with Michael Caruana (Mama Kin, Bomba, John Butler) who produced and played on the album. It also features guest artists such as George Servanis (Mama Kin, Bomba), Paul Bel Castro (Canoe), Geoff Wells (Daryl Braithwaite), Colin Wilson (Piano) and Matt McQuillen (Drums/Percussion).

The release of “Treading air” will mark the beginning of an ongoing national tour, with performance dates already set in place throughout Melbourne, Gippsland, the Victorian Alps, the Victorian surf coast and the Australian east coast. Planned touring routes will also include South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania in 2011/2012; and internationally, Dylan will be performing in Hokkaido, Japan in March 2011. Essentially Dylan is a guitarist/vocalist and will often strip back his live shows to their pure form; his voice and his acoustic guitar. But in sensing the mood and nurturing it, the natural progression of his performances will encapsulate his multi-instrumentation, his infectious percussive grooves and the spontaneity that he lives for.
